Talking about Tiananmen in China in 1990
I first went to China in 1990 a little over one year after Tiananmen. This was a year before the first web browser, but people had shortwave radios and listened to VOA and BBC. They would start conversations by telling me how what VOA said couldn’t possibly be true - but it was also a way of having a conversation about it without as much personal risk.
